How Do Process Cooling and Heat Recovery Systems Work?

Industrial process cooling, by definition, is when a media such as water or water-based lubricant is required for a specific process to keep that process at a set temperature and keep it operating safely and efficiently. Heat is usually removed when the process media is pumped through a heat exchanger. Cold water on a separate pumping circuit is pumped through the heat exchanger in the opposite direction, with heat transferring from the process to the cool water through a series of thermal conducting plates; this is called conduction. The opposing flows are not mixed. Only the energy is transferred from them.

Heat Removal

Removing this heat from the process means the heat must be dissipated elsewhere. Be it straight to the atmosphere via an airblast cooler, chiller or water tower. Or preferably, the energy can be used elsewhere for a process that may require the opposite energy transfer, a process that may need heating. For example, one such process could be the return flow of a boiler. There are many opportunities for reusing energy within the industrial sector, and these opportunities must be considered with the impact on the environment and our energy usage becoming ever more critical.
