Project Overview

integratedAIR were approached by a leading brick manufacturing site in the North West of the UK to design an LEV (Local Exhaust Ventilation) system for the automatic setting machines within their facility. The building materials manufacturing industry is particularly at risk from harmful dusts like RCS (Respirable Crystalline Silica), and this client has a long-standing history of investing in continuous improvement initiatives in health and safety to ensure the wellbeing of staff across multiple sites. This client has worked with integratedAIR on a number of projects to successfully install a range of bespoke LEV systems that address common dust control issues, ensuring the long-term safety of their employees and protecting the longevity of their business.

RCS Dust and BlueClean® Filtration

The processing of raw organic materials like clay in the manufacture of bricks makes exposure to RCS dust a pervasive threat as much of it is not visible to the naked eye and can cause serious health issues from even short-term exposure.

RCS can cause various respiratory issues, such as silicosis, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer. Inhaling these particles can also irritate the eyes, nose, and throat and can cause coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing. Exposure to these particles over time can lead to long-term health problems, including lung scarring and reduced lung capacity.

integratedAIR System’s BlueClean® VC PRO 8 pulse jet cartridge filter unit was used due to its ability to handle high dust loads whilst remaining compact in size; this application requires the filter to be situated centrally inside the facility, and to function for a number of hours each day without disrupting personnel working in the surrounding area.

The compact footprint of the unit and internally housed compressed air cleaning system allows efficient cleaning of the filter media with minimal disturbance to the local environment.

Bespoke hoods used in this application ensure the seamless extraction of dust produced from the automatic setting machine through high-quality, heavy-duty mild steel painted ductwork, which conveys the dust-laden air to the filter unit. Additional hoods were installed at the conveyor transfer point of the facility to extract the dust produced when unusable bricks are collected prior to being recycled.

As advised by our sales department, the client invested in an additional H14 HEPA multi-wedge secondary filter to process the exhaust air from our BlueClean® VC PRO 8 before being exhausted back into the facility.

This process ensures the RCS dust is efficiently extracted from source and filtered from the conveying air with high-efficiency spun-bonded polyester filter media in the form of 8 pleated cartridges. This is then reinforced by HEPA secondary filtration, with the filtered dust from the primary filters being deposited through a mancuna valve into a waste collection self-tipping skip.
